Hamilton CarShare

Car sharing is a great way to reduce emissions and build community...

What is Car Sharing?
Car sharing programs provide their members access to a vehicle when necessary, without the expense of ownership or the allure of just going for a drive.
When you want a glass of milk, do you buy the cow? When you want to drive, why buy the car?

Who is Hamilton CarShare?
Grand River CarShare, the parent organization of Hamilton CarShare, incorporated as The People's Car Co-operative Inc., is as a non-profit carsharing co-operative without share capital. Our mission is to deliver a carsharing service and to promote carsharing as an important component of a transportation system that supports an alternative to the privately-owned automobile within the Region of Waterloo and the City of Hamilton. Through this we seek to reduce overall transportation costs, traffic congestion, and air pollution, thus improving our communities.

Background
In March 2009 Green Venture partnered with Clean Air Hamilton and the First Unitarian Church of Hamilton to deliver a public presentation and gauge interest for a Hamilton Car Share program.  Car share champions that surfaced from the community were invited to take on the leadership of a made in Hamilton program.  These champions participated in two future workshops with visiting experts: facilitator Mike Driscoll, Guelph Car Share Cooperative and guest Jason Hammond, Grand River Car Share Cooperative.  These workshops provided the champions with tools to help them develop a framework for taking their Hamilton Car Share program to the implementation phase.
This group of engaged citizens worked with Grand River CarShare staff and a variety of partners including the City of Hamilton, Ethical Consumer Cooperative and First Unitarian Church to establish Hamilton’s first Car Share Cooperative.
